Minha história com a fotografia começou a ter relevância em 2010, quando comprei minha primeira câmera DSLR para uma viagem de férias internacional que fiz com minha família. O gosto pela fotografia foi quase que imediato devido inicialmente ao prazer de usar a câmera e depois a satisfação pessoal de criar um tipo de arte, coisa que nunca fui capaz antes. Como essa história começou com um equipamento, acho importante compartilhar aqui neste blog os equipamentos que uso.

Photography in my life became relevant in 2010, when I bought my first DSLR for a travel to England that I was about to do with my family. The taste for photography was immediate, first because of the pleasure to use the semi-professional camera that I had bought and later due to the personal satisfaction of creating some kind of art, something that I was never able before. Since this history began with a piece of equipment, I figure out that it is important to share in this blog the type of equipment I use.

Minha primeira compra determinou os rumos do meu investimento em equipamentos. Não vou ficar discutindo se hoje compraria os mesmos equipamentos ou não pois acho isso um ponto irrelevante, visto que até hoje não tive nenhuma razão concreta para ficar insatisfeito com os resultados obtidos até agora.

My first acquisition determined the direction of my investment in equipment’s. I won’t duel on endless discussions about the merits of each brand, as I believe this is irrelevant. What really matters is if the equipment you have allows you to realize your ideas.

Equipamentos

Minha primeira DSLR foi uma Sony Alpha A230 com a lente original 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 (SAL1855), comprada em 2010. Na época, era a DSLR mais simples da linha Sony Alpha, com um sensor APS-C de 10M pixels, com recursos básicos e de tamanho relativamente compacto para uma DSLR. Ainda sim, muito eficiente e útil, principalmente como uma alternativa para passeios em que seria difícil levar a mochila completa ou equipamentos maiores. Hoje utilizo ela como equipamento de apoio nos workshops que ofereço, onde muitas vezes os alunos ainda não possuem uma DSLR própria.

My first DSLR was a Sony Alpha A230 with its original lens of 18-55mm 3.5 (SAL1855), bought in 2010. It was the simplest DSLR for the Sony Alpha products, featuring an APS-C sensor with 10M pixels, basic features and relatively small in size for a DSLR. Even though, very efficient and useful, mostly as an option to small trips where it would be difficult to carry the fully loaded backpack or bigger cameras. Nowadays I use it as a supporting camera in the workshops that I provide, where many times the students doesn’t have their own DSLRs.

Sony Alpha A580

Possui um sensor APS-C, mas com 16M pixels. Possui bem mais recursos que a A230 e era a câmera da linha Sony Alpha com o melhor desempenho em ISOs altos quando foi lançada, garantindo boas imagens até 6400 e podendo chegar até 25600 em ISO estendido. Muita rápida, sendo capaz de registrar até 10 fotos por segundo no modo de prioridade de disparo e com foco travado na primeira cena. Trata-se de uma câmera bastante sofisticada e não cabe aqui descrever todas as suas características. O website DPReview possui um teste completo sobre A580.

Features an APS-C sensor with 16M pixels. The A580 owns a lot more features than the A230, it was the Sony Alpha with the best performance in high ISOs when was released, assuring good pictures up to 6400 and going up to 25600 in extended mode. It is a very fast camera, able to take up to 10 shoots per second in the shooter priority mode with focus locked in the first frame. It is a very sophisticated camera e it is not feasible to describe all its features here. The website DPReview has done a very thoroughly test with the A580.

Sony Alpha A700

Atualmente a minha câmera titular é a A700, com um sensor APS-C de 12M pixels. Trata-se de uma câmera com quase todas os recursos de uma câmera profissional, além de ter o corpo parcialmente selado contra poeira e umidade. A A700 permite controlar a abertura e disparo em controles separados, o que é uma condição indispensável para uma câmera semi-profissional ou profissional. Também permite um maior controle sobre os ajustes de abertura, disparo e ISO, tais como incremento de cada passo e um maior número de ajustes possíveis, que também é fundamental. Mas por ser uma câmera mais antiga que a A580, não possui visor com Live-View e apresenta um desempenho fraco em ISOs altos. O website Alpha Mount World possui um teste completo sobre a A700.

Nowadays my preferred camera is the A700, featuring an APS-C sensor with 12M pixels. The A700 presents almost all features that a professional camera must have, besides being encased in a partial sealed body against dust and humidity. It allows control over aperture and shooter in separate dials which is indispensable to a semi-professional or professional camera. And also allows more control over aperture, shooter and ISO, such as set up of the steps’ increment or higher range of steps, both very important features to a camera of this class. However, being older than the A580, it does not features a Live-View visor and neither performs very well in high ISOs. The website Alpha Mount World has done a very thoroughly test with the A700.

Minolta Dynax 60

A Minolta Dynax 60 é uma câmera de filme, do tipo SLR, lançada em 2004, que comprei usada na Amazon do Reino Unido. A Minolta (Konica-Minolta) foi comprada pela Sony em 2006 e é a origem das câmeras da linha Sony Alpha. As câmeras da linha Sony Alpha usam o mesmo sistema de lentes ‘A Mount’ desenvolvido pela Minolta e por isso podem compartilhas as lentes. O modelo Dynax 60 é uma SLR com todos os ajustes básicos próprios de uma câmera profissional, mas sem os recursos disponíveis para as câmeras top de linha da época, o que não fazem falta, aliás, nesse caso, quanto mais simples a câmera melhor. Minha intenção é justamente praticar fotografia de uma forma mais artesanal, sem o auxílio da tecnologia e dessa forma aprender a enxergar as cenas com mais clareza e saber de imediato como a foto vai ficar dependendo dos ajustes que eu fizer ao invés de usar o método de ‘tentativa e erro’, viável com a era digital. Com essa câmera eu tenho usado apenas filmes preto e branco, principalmente os Ilford FP4 Plus 125 e HP5 Plus 400. Para saber mais sobre essa câmera clique aqui.

The Minolta Dynax 60 is a film camera, SLR type, released in 2004, that I bought used at UK’s Amazon. Minolta (Konica-Minolta) were acquired by Sony in 2006 and it is the origin of Sony Alpha’s cameras family. All Sony Alpha cameras use the same ‘A Mount’ technology developed by Minolta for its lenses, allowing to share old and new lenses. The Dynax 60 is an SLR with all basic features of a professional camera, but without the top of the line features of its age, which are not missed, as a matter of fact, in this case, the less technology, the better. My goal is to practice photography in a more artisanal level, without the crutch provided by technology and this way learn to see the scenes with more clarity and knows immediately how the picture will come out depending on the set up I use, instead to rely on the ‘try and error’ approach feasible with the digital era. With this camera I have been using black and white films, mostly the Ilford’s FP$ Plus 125 and HP5 Plus 400. to know more about this camera click here.

18-55mm F3.5-5.6 DT (SAL1855)

Lente zoom do kit das câmeras DSLRs básicas da família Sony Alpha. É razoavelmente boa e produz fotos satisfatórias. Tendo em mente a máxima de quem faz a foto é o fotógrafo e não o equipamento, esta lente cumpre o seu papel. Standard zoom lens for the kit that comes with the basic DSLRs from the Sony Alpha family. It’s reasonably good and produce good enough pictures. Bearing in mind that it is the photographer that creates the picture and not the equipment, this lens fulfil its role.

55-200mm F4.5-56 DT (SAL55200)

Lente zoom telescópica complementar do kit das DSLRs básicas da Sony Alpha. É de qualidade similar a lente 18-55. Zoom telescopic lens, part of the complementary kit for the basic Sony Alpha DSLRs. With similar quality to the 18-55 lens.

11-18 F4.5-5.6 DT (SAL1118)

Lente zoom grande angular da série DT (própria para câmeras APS-C) da Sony Alpha. Apesar de ter uma distância focal complementar às duas lentes do kit das câmeras básicas da Sony Alpha, esta possui uma qualidade superior às da 18-55 e 55-200. Mesmo sendo melhor, não é ainda uma lente excelente, visto a abertura máxima variável de apenas 4.5 à 11mm e 5.6 à 18mm. Wide angle zoom lens, from Sony Alpha’s DT series (specific to APS-C cameras). Despite featuring a focal distance complementary to both lenses part of the kits, this lens is of better quality than them. Even being better, it’s not an excellent lens due to the maximum variable aperture of only 4.5 at 11mm up to 5.6 at 18mm.

Carl Zeis 16-80mm F3.5-4.5 DT (SAL1680Z)

Esta sim é uma lente muito boa que produz ótimos resultados. Trata-se de uma lente Carl Zeiss exclusiva da família Sony Alpha. Ainda não é excelente, pois possui uma abertura máxima variável de apenas 3.5 à 16mm até 4.5 à 80mm e, assim como as três lentes anteriores, pertence a série DT da linha de lentes Sony Alpha, isso quer dizer que estas lentes são específicas para câmeras com sensores APS-C, não sendo 100% compatíveis com sensores full-frame. Esta lente, junto com a câmera A700, formam o meu equipamento principal de trabalho. This is a really good lens that deliveries great results. It’s a Carl Zeiss lens, exclusive for the Sony Alpha family. Still not quite excellent due to the maximum variable aperture of only 3.5 at 16mm up to 4.5 at 80mm, and as the three previous lenses, belongs to the DT series. DT lenses are specific to APS-C sensors and not fully compatible with full-frame sensors. This lens, plus the A700 body, make my main work equipment.

G70-300 F4.5-5.6 (SAL70300G)

Outra lente muito boa, esta da série G (Gold) que foi introduzida pela Minolta como a série de lentes top de linha para as câmeras do tipo ‘A Mount’. Assim como a 16-80 Zeiss, é muito boa mas ainda não é excelente, devido apenas a abertura máxima varável de apenas 4.5 para 70mm e 5.6 para 300mm. Diferentemente das quatro lentes anteriores, esta é uma lente compatível tanto com sensores APS-C como com sensores full-frame. Esta é uma das duas lentes extras que levo na mochila, além da 16-80 Zeiss. Another very good lens, this one from the G (Gold) series, introduced by Minolta as the top of the line lenses to the ‘A Mount’ type cameras. As well as the 16-80 Zeiss, it is very good, but not quite excellent, due to the maximum variable aperture of only 4.5 at 70mm up to 5.6 at 300mm. Unlike the four previous lenses, this is fully compatible with both sensors size, APS-C and full-frame. This is one of the two extra lenses that I carry in my backpack, besides the 16-80 Zeiss.

50mm F2.8 Macro (SAL50F28M)

Apesar de não ser da série G, é uma das duas melhores lentes que possuo. É compatível com sensores APS-C e full-frame, possui distância focal fixa de 50mm e abertura máxima fixa de 2.8, é do tipo macro (possui relação ótica de 1:1) e possui um curso do foco bastante longo com opção de redução automática do mesmo. Tem um desempenho excelente em todas as condições, mas por ser macro e ter um foco com curso longo, muitas vezes é melhor usar o foco manual. Despite not being from the G series, this is one of the two best lenses that I own. It is compatible with both sensors, APS-C and full-frame, 50mm fixed focal length and maximum aperture of 2.8. It’s a macro lens (optic relation of 1:1) and a very long course for focusing, with auto focus lock to diminish the focus course and make it faster. Outstanding performance in all conditions, but because it is a macro lens with a long focus course, sometimes it is better to use the manual focus option.

100mm F2.8 Macro (SAL100F28M)

Lente similar a 50mm Macro, só que com distância focal de 100mm. Esta é a segunda lente extra que levo na mochila. Lens similar to the Macro 50mm, only with a focal length of 100mm. This is the second extra lens that I carry in my backpack.

20-100mm F3.5-5.6

Lente zoom com abertura máxima variável de 3.5 à 20mm até 5.6 à 100mm e foco automático. Esta é a lente que acompanha a Minolta Dynax 60. É uma lente de qualidade similar à 18-55. Faz o seu trabalho. Standard zoom lens with maximum variable aperture of 3.5 at 20mm up to 5.6 at 100mm and auto focus. This is the lens that came with the Minolta Dynax 60. It’s a lens of similar quality to the 18-55mm. It gets the job done.

Hoya Circular Polarizer Filter

Filtros polarizadores Hoya  circulares de 55mm de diâmetro para as lentes 18-55 e 55-200. Se necessário também podem ser usados nas lentes macro, mas o uso normal destas lentes não requer esse tipo de filtro. Hoya polarizer filters with 55mm diameter to the lenses 18-55 and 55-200. If needed, they can also be used with the macro lenses, but the standard use of those lenses do not require such filters.

Para levar tudo isso – To carry on all that stuf.

Para levar todo esse equipamento eu tenho duas opções: uma bolsa para câmeras da linha Sony Alpha que leva apenas uma câmera para passeios sem compromisso e; uma mochila Tamrac Evolution 8 com capacidade para uma câmera mais duas lentes extras e um flash, ou duas câmeras mais uma lente extra e o flash. A mochila pode levar também meu notebook e um tripé. Totalmente carregada ela pesa em torno de 10Kg. To carry all that gear around I have two options: a Sony Alpha hand bag that carries only one camera to wander around and; a Tamrac Evolution 8 backpack with capacity to carry one camera plus two extra lenses and a speed light unit, or two cameras and an extra lens and the speed light unit. The backpack can also carry my notebook and one tripod. Fully loaded the backpack weights almost 10Kg.

– Pós-produção – Post Production

Em viagem eu costumo usar meu notebook Sony Vaio, mas em casa trabalhando a pós-produção das imagens eu prefiro meu desktop Dell Optiplex 990 com 16GB de ram e monitor de 23″, rodando um Adobe Lightroom 4 e os plugins da NIK Software. When traveling I use my Sony Vaio notebook, but back home when working the images post production I prefer to use my Dell Optiplex 990 desktop with 16GB ram and 23″ monitor, running Adobe Lightroom 4 and the NIK Software plugins.
