Erick Salomon começou a trabalhar para o grupo Ullstein Publicações em 1925, e logo ficou fascinado pela fotografia, especialmente pela possibilidade de fotografar com pouca luz. Sua carreira foi fortalecida pela cobertura de um importante julgamento de assassinato. Escondendo sua câmera em um chapéu “côco”, ele registrou todos os protagonistas e quando questionado por um oficial da corte ele entregou apenas os filmes não expostos, escapando com todos os demais. Ele participou de muitas das conferências européias dos anos inter-guerras. Um diplomata inconformado desabafou, “Atualmente podemos realizar uma conferência sem ministros, mas não sem o Sr. Salomon”. O ministro francês do exterior perguntou: “Onde esta o Sr. Salomon? Não podemos começar sem ele. As pessoas irão pensar que esta conferência não é importante.” Salomon preferia a câmera Ermanox, com sua lente de grande abertura. Ele a escondia embaixo de seu casaco, e disparava usando um cabo disparador que corria por dentro da manga.

Undercover Operator

Erick Salomon began working for the Ullstein Publishing group in 1925, and soon became fascinated by photography, especially by the possibilities of shooting at low light levels. His career was launched by his coverage of a sensational murderer trial. Concealing his camera in a bowler hat, he recorded all the protagonists and, when challenged by a court attendant, yielded up only the unexposed film, escaping with the rest. He attended most of the European conferences of the inter-war years. One affronted diplomat sighed, “One can hold conferences these days without ministers, but not without Dr. Salomon”. The French Foreign Minister wondered, “Where is Dr. Salomon? We can’t start without him. The people won’t think this conference is important at all”. Salomon preferred the Ermanox camera, with its large aperture lens. He would hide it under his coat, and fire the shutter using a cable release running up the inside of the sleeve.
