Esta viagem para Buenos Aires surgiu meio que por acaso. Ganhamos a estadia em uma promoção e resolvemos aproveitar. Foi um final de semana em janeiro, sol forte, muito calor, muitas filas nos pontos turísticos e a cidade vazia nos demais lugares.

This trip to Buenos Aires came out of the blue. We won the hotel hosting in a marketing action e decided to make use of it. It was a weekend in January, a hard and very hot sun, a lot of queues at the tourism points and the remaining parts of the city very empty.

Buenos Aires foi uma surpresa agradável. A cidade e a arquitetura lembram muito o Rio de Janeiro. Não sou historiador mas sei que ambas tem aproximadamente a mesma idade, são ou foram capitas de seus países e centros de poder militar, receberam muita influência arquitetônica e cultural francesa nos séculos 18 e 19 além de serem centros turísticos.

Buenos Aires was a delightful surprise. The city and its architecture remainds me a lot about Rio de Janeiro. I am not a historian, but I know the both cities are approximatelly of the same age, they are or have been capitals of their countries e military power centers, received a lot of architect and cultural influence from France in the 18^th and 19^th centuries, as well beeing world tourism centers.

Mas as semelhanças acabam aí. Ao contrário da “Cidade Maravilhosa”, Buenos Aires é limpa e bem cuidada. Seus locais públicos e prédios históricos estão razoavelmente bem preservados. Antigas avenidas, ruas e calçadas largas nas áreas mais antigas da cidade permanecem como sempre foram. E um projeto de renovação bem sucedido ainda em andamento na região de Puerto Madera, contribuem para a aparência saudável da cidade.

But the similarities end there. Different from the “Wonderful City” (Rio de Janeiro is well known as the “Cidade Maravilhosa”, or “Wonderful City”), Buenos Aires is clean and well taken care. Its public places and historic buildings are fairly well preserved. Old large avenues, streets and sidewalks, remain as they always have been. And an on going, well succeeded renovation project for the Puerto Madera region, contributes to the healthy appearance of the city.

Voltando a falar das semelhanças, podemos citar o trânsito caótico com motoristas excessivamente mal-educados e a sensação de insegurança devido ao alto índice de furtos. Vários amigos e familiares que haviam visitado Buenos Aires nos contaram experiências desagradáveis com objetos pessoais e bolsas furtadas nas ruas, lojas e locais de aglomeração de pessoas. Já em Buenos Aires, fomos também avisados por argentinos com quem conversamos durante a viagem, para tomarmos cuidados com nossos pertences pessoais pois havia muitos furtos na cidade. Preocupados com a enorme quantidade de casos de furto relatados, acabamos levando apenas a nossa antiga câmera fotográfica DSLR Sony Alpha A230 apenas com a lente original de 18-55mm.

Back to the similarities, we can cite the caotic traffic with its exceedingly rude drivers and the feeling of insecuritie due to the high index of thievery. Several friends and family members that has been in Buenos Aires recently told us about their unpleasant experiences with personal objects being stolen in the streets, stores or crowded places. Already in Buenos Aires, we were also warned by argentinians with whom we talked to be carefull with our personal belongings as there was a lot o thievery in the city. Worried due to all the stories we heard about thievery in Buenos Aires, we decided to take with us only our old DSLR Sony Alpha A230 with the 11-18mm original lens.

Entretanto, tivemos um final de semana muito tranquilo e agradável. Andamos muito a pé pela cidade, tanto de dia quanto de noite, tirando fotos e passeando e, acabamos lamentando a falta do nosso equipamento completo para tirar fotos melhores e mais interessantes.

However, we had a pleasantry and tranquil weekend. We walked a lot through the city, day and night, taking pictures and wandering aimlessy and, in the end, we were sorry that we had not brought our full gear to take better and more interesting pictures.

Para conhecer Buenos Aires ficam 2 sugestões: longas caminhas e uso dos ônibus turísticos. Estes ônibus oferecem a opção de um ticket válido por 2 dias que, somado a possibilidade de sair e voltar para os diversos ônibus que cobrem um longo roteiro com mais de 20 paradas espalhadas pela cidade, com intervalos de 1hr entre cada ônibus; são uma ótima forma de locomoção pela cidade.

To know Buenos Aires, here are 2 suggestions: long walks and the use of the Tour Buses. The Tour Buses offers the option of a 2 days ticket that, along with the possibility to leave and get back to the several buses the covers a large route with more than 20 stops spreaded through the city, with 1hr intervals between each bus; are a great way to move through the city.

O hotel é muito luxuoso mas ficou a sensação que está ultrapassado, com mobília antiga e decoração fora de moda. De certa forma reflete um pouco a cidade atual; bonito e razoavelmente bem cuidado, mas apesar de caro para os nossos padrões, está bem abaixo do preço para os padrões de alto luxo, certamente por não conseguir se manter atualizado.

The hotel is very luxurious but it left the feeling that is old fashioned, with old furniture and out of fashion decor. In a way, it reflects a bit the city; beautiful, fairly well kept, but even being expensive to my standards, it is still under priced compared to the currently high standard options, obviously due to not being able to be kept updated.

Avenida Lavalle, predominantemente de pedestres, mas com acesso local para carros. Junto com a Calle Florida (esta apenas para pedestres) e demais ruas próximas, formam um centro de compras de roupas e artigos de couro, restaurantes tradicionais e lojas diversas.

Lavalle Avenue, mainly for pedestrians, but with local car access. Together with Calle Florida (this one only to pedestrians) and other nearby streets, make a center for leather clothes and other goods, traditional restaurants and different stores.

Roupas de couro de excelente qualidade e para todos os gostos com preços atrativos, essa parece ser a especialidade da cidade hoje em dia.

Excellent leather clothes to all tastes with attractive prices, this seems to be the city’s specialty these days.

Restaurantes tradicionais que pelos uniformes dos garçons, arrumação das mesas e tipos de entradas servidas, me lembraram muito os restaurantes cariocas que eu frequentava com meus pais na década de 80.

Traditional restaurants that by the waiter’s uniforms, tables set up and entrées variety, remainds me a lot of the restaurants that I used to visit with my parents in Rio de Janeiro back in the 80’s.

A comida é deliciosa e bem feita, a carne excelente, uma batata frita peculiar e muito gostosa no “Rei da Papas Fritas”, mas, é aquela história, “o que os olhos não vêem, o coração não sente”. Basta dizer que a higiene deixa muito a desejar nos restaurantes tradicionais desta área. Nada que não estejamos acostumados a ver em diversas partes do Brasil e certas áreas das grandes cidades brasileiras.

The food is delicious, the meat is excellent, a peculiar fried potato, very tastfull served in the “Rei das Papas Fritas” (“King of the Fried Potatoes”), but, as the say goes, “what the eyes don’t see, the heart doesn’t feel”. Enough to say that the concept of hygiene for the traditional restaurants around this area is very different from our food and healthy standards. No different from what we are used to see in several parts of Brazil and some places in the big brazilian cities.

Avenida 9 de Julho, intitulada a mais larga do mundo, onde se encontram vários pontos turísticos, como o Obelisco e o Teatro Cólon, e próxima da Casa Rosada, sede da presidência. 9 de Julho Avenue, called the “Largest Avenue of the World”, where several post cards are located, such as the Obelisc and the Cólon Theatre, and nearby “Casa Rosada” (“Pink House”), seat of government.

Praça localizada atrás do Teatro Cólon, onde sempre podem ser vistos antigos suportes de partitura tomando sol. Não sei dizer se eles formam uma exposição permanente ou apenas é hábito dos funcionários do teatro em dias de sol. Square located at the back of the Cólon Theatre, where partitura’s stands can be seen bathing under the sun. I’m not sure  if it’s a permanent exhibition or just an habit of the theatre’s employees in sunny days.

Na cidade toda é possível achar praças amplas, cheias de árvores e bem cuidadas. É costume entre os argentinos frequentar estas praças nos finais de semana para tomar sol, fazer piqueniques e se divertir em família ou grupos de amigos. The city is plenty of large and well kept squares full of trees. It’s custom to the people to go to the squares in the weekends, to sun bath, to have pic-nics and have fun among family and friends.

Muita gente andando de bicicleta pela cidade ao longo de várias ciclovias e com a colaboração do trânsito. Apesar do trânsito caótico, os motoristas argentinos são cuidadosos com pedestres e ciclistas. Lots of people cycling through the city along the several cycleways with the collaboration of the traffic. Despite the caotic traffic, the drivers seems to put their rudeness aside and be carefull with pedestrians and bike riders.

Várias esculturas e obras de arte podem ser apreciadas em diversas praças e, diferentemente das esculturas e obras de arte que proliferam pelas praças brasileiras, estão quase todas em ótimo estado de conservação. Mais uma vez mostrando não só a preocupação do governo, mas também a educação e o cuidado do povo para com o patrimônio público.

Several sculptures and pieces of art work can be seen at the squares and differently from the sculptures and art work that proliferate the brazilian squares, those are in great state of conservation. Once again showing that not only the government but also the people is well educated and concerned with the public patrimony.

Pelo jeito a arquitetura portenha é especialista em prédios esguios. It seems that the argentinian architecture is specialized in slim buildings.

No final de semana as ruas ficam vazias e tranquilas nas áreas que não são tradicionais pontos turísticos. In the weekends the streets becomes empty and peacefull in areas not belonging to traditional tourism centers.

Muitas árvores espalhadas pelas ruas da cidade deixando ainda um bom espaço para os pedestres. Lots of trees spreaded along the streets through the city still leaving a good portion of the sidewalks to the pedestrians.

Vista de Puerto Madera, região que está em processo de revitalização e já bastante visitada devido aos ótimos restaurantes e lojas localizados em antigos armazéns portuários. Vários prédios residenciais modernos e hotéis luxuosos de redes internacionais já construídos e em construção. Several modern residential buildings and luxury hotels from international chains already built and being built.

A Linha “A” do Metropolitano de Buenos Aires também identificada como Linha Azul, foi aberta ao público em 1 de dezembro de 1913, tornando-se o primeiro sistema metroviário da América Latina e do Hemisfério Sul.

The Line “A” of Buenos Aires Metropolitan, also called Line Blue, opened to the public on December 1^st, 1913, becoming the first underground system for Latin America and South Hemisfer.

No todo, a rede metroviária é pequena e muito parecida com os metrôs do Rio de Janeiro e São Paulo, mas é mais antiga e mostra a idade. Os metrôs cariocas e paulista são mais bonitos e eficientes.

All told, the underground system is small and very similar to Rio de Janeiro’s and São Paulo´s underground systems, but it is older and it is starting to show its age. Cariocas’ and Paulistas’ underground are more beautifull and efficient. (Carioca refers to “born in Rio de Janeiro” and Paulista refers to “born in São Paulo”)

Hora de voltar pra casa. Apesar do grande fluxo de turistas brasileiros para Buenos Aires, as 3hrs de vôo não justificam mais do que os pequenos Airbus A320 e similares, com suas colunas duplas de 3 assentos.

Time to get back to home. Despite the great flux of brazilian tourists to and from Buenos Aires, the 3hrs flight do not justify more than the small Airbus A320 and similar planes, with its double columns of 3 seats.

Como disse no início, Buenos Aires foi uma surpresa muito agradável. Cidade bonita, limpa e com grandes atrações. Obviamente nem tudo são flores. A Argentina e os argentinos sofrem com muitos problemas econômicos e a incompetência do governo serve apenas para agravar a situação. Exceto pelos produtos locais, nada mais pode ser encontrado nas lojas. O país sofre com um desabastecimento enorme de produtos graças as regras econômicas absurdas impostas pelo governo.

As I said in the beginning, Buenos Aires was a very pleasantry surprise. A beautiful city, clean and full of attractions. Obviously not everything smells good. Argentina and its people suffer with several economic issues and the government incompetency only increases the severity of the situation. Except for local goods, nothing more can be found in the stores. The country is going a severe shortage of products due to the absurd economic rules set by the government.

Mas ainda assim; a cidade, as atrações, os restaurantes e até mesmo o povo, pelo menos aqueles que estão diretamente ligados ao turismo, fazem valer à pena a visita. Ficou a sensação de que Buenos Aires merece uma nova visita, mais longa e melhor planejada, para ter a atenção que merece.

Even though; the city, the attractions, the restaurants, and even the people, at least those direct engaged in the tourism business, make worth the trip. There is this lasting feeling  that a new trip is needed, longer and better planned, to give the attention that the city deserves.
